Stepper Motor and Gearbox Speed - wypyr - 04-15-2015

Hello everyone!
Yesterday I put together my motor, miniEngine v1 controller and slider together. I am using a rod to move the plate on which camera will sit. The rod is rotated by a stepper motor. Motor I am using is NEMA 17 with 27:1 reduction ratio gearbox. However, on maximum speed (I put miniEngine max speed delay to 0ms) the plate has moved only about 20-25 cm in 30 minutes. It is to slow, I guess. Do you guys have any ideas on how to increase speed? Should I get another motor with 14:1 reduction or even 5:1 reduction? Thanks.

Also, is a gearbox required for this type of project? Stepper motor itself will not have enough torque to rotate the rod and move the plate with camera on it?

Hello, I guess that a single stepper motor without reduction will actually do the job due to the fact that worm drives already have a great reduction ratio. such a simple stepper motor should not be too pricey (about 20USD) and if you find out it is not working you can still get one with 1:2 up to 1:5 reduction.
